Li-Ling Chang, the design director at Dayen Design, has created a masterpiece in the heart of Nantun District, Taichung City, Taiwan. The project, aptly named "Light and Shadow into Poetry," is a public space that beautifully intertwines light and architecture. Finished in October 2015, the project spans an area of 830 square meters and has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
The design's uniqueness lies in its innovative use of light as the protagonist. Chang has crafted an interwoven atmosphere of light and shadow through the strategic use of windows and delicate grille walls. The reflection of light and the glimmering images it casts within the building allow visitors to experience the passage of time through spatial correspondence. The diminishing light and transformation of objects turn the space into a narrator of light, creating a poetic dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Another distinctive feature of Chang's design is the use of wall surfaces. These surfaces, varying in size and function, define the space, shape the scene, and provide a sense of tranquility. The walls separate the indoor and outdoor areas, with front openings creating framed sceneries and facilitating different functions. The walls also serve as a field for silence, expectation, and meditation, shaping dual sceneries of vision and emotion.
Chang's choice of materials further enhances the design's simplicity and purity. Shandong white granite flamed finish serves as the base, representing simplicity and purity. Thin black metallic lines outline the building, creating a front opening in different ratios. These compendious lines shape a thick, sculptural mass, revealing details of tranquility and remoteness in the forms of low profile and calmness.
The project faced creative and technical challenges, particularly in utilizing wall surfaces to define space and shape scenes. However, Chang's innovative approach turned these challenges into strengths, creating a public space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and emotionally engaging.
In conclusion, "Light and Shadow into Poetry" is a testament to Li-Ling Chang's innovative design principles and technical prowess. The project's success lies in its ability to transform a public space into a poetic interplay of light and shadow, offering a unique, engaging experience for its visitors. It's no surprise that this design has earned Chang prestigious recognition in the field of interior space and retail design.
